Bioethics in Korea ¡ª Past and Present
Hwang Sang-Ik

Abstract
It was in the late 1990s that discussions and activities began in earnest on bioethics in Korea. However, since the 1960s, there have been cases and issues related to bioethics, and there have been social debates and discussions. The year 1997 is a turning point in the history of bioethics in Korea. With the birth of the cloned sheep Dolly, interest in bioethics rose and there was a case of Boramae Medical Center that shocked the medical profession. In addition, the total revision of the "Doctors" Ethics Declaration" of the Korean Medical Association was enacted, the "Code of Ethics for Physicians" was established, and the Korean Society for Medical Ethics Education and the Korean Bioethics Association were established. The "Hwang Woo-suk scandal" in 2005 is still the biggest incident in Korea"s history of bioethics, and it has been constantly a lesson for us, and we need continuous review and rumination on it. As a result of the scandal, the laws related to bioethics, such as the Bioethics and Safety Act, have been put in place and the role of the National Bioethics Committee has become more fulfilled. In addition, IRBs are installed in most human subject research institutes and hospitals, and research institutes such as the Korea National Institute for Bioethics Policy are also established and active in business. The Korean Society for Medical Ethics and the Korean Bioethics Association have also established themselves as academic institutions related to bioethics. Above all, it is fortunate that the interest of related researchers and citizens in bioethics has increased. However, I can not help but ask when I see the incident of the secretary official Jeong, M.D. to leak patient"s information illegally in 2014 and the case of the death of a peasant Baek Nam-ki in 2016. What is the current address of bioethics in Korean society? And what is the meaning of the existence of bioethics?
